Community Investment

At Long Lake, we are engaged in developing a bountiful resource with a long lifespan and tremendous future growth potential. Recoverable bitumen reserves for just the first phase of this project are independently estimated in excess of one billion barrels – enough to sustain production of more than 70,000 barrels per day for over 40 years.

A key component of our success in this undertaking involves building mutually beneficial relationships and improving the quality of life within the communities where we do business. We seek to do so by:

  • investing in non-profit, community-driven initiatives that build local capacity and capability; communicating actively and resolving issues with input from local individuals and organizations; and providing significant opportunities for local employment, training and business development.

Our community investments fall into five categories: Education & Training, Community Development, Environment, Health & Wellness, and Culture, Arts & Recreation. Major investments include $250,000 for the new Bill Woodward School in Anzac and scholarships for post-secondary education in the Wood Buffalo region; $150,000 for an Indoor Running Track at Keyano College; and $100,000 to help the Fort McMurray YWCA expand its Day Care service.

Sod turning for the new Bill Woodward School symbolizes the beginning of a new era in education in Anzac. In October 2008, Long Lake acknowledged and thanked the surrounding community for its support by announcing our largest contribution to date -- $2.5 million, including $1.5 million for ancillary items to enhance the educational offering at the Bill Woodward School now under construction in Anzac. The remaining $1 million will go toward scholarships for future grade 12 graduates within the Wood Buffalo region to pursue post-secondary studies.
